Blue Bird bus transmission replacement

  1. Remove the Y pipe. Disconnect two oxygen sensors, one of each side. Be sure to heat the nuts before removing. Usually 4 nuts(15mm, some are 14mm) on front, two of each side, left and front. 2 nuts on rear. Or will break the screws in the manifold some times.

  2. Remove the accessory of transmission. Left side, two screws hold the parking brake bracket to trans, wire connectors to the trans, one bolt hold the front part of parking brake, one bolt hold the gear selector. Right side, dipstick tube (one bolt hold to the trans, one bolt on the top), trans in and out cooler line. Top, 2 bolt hold the parking brake bracket, disconnect the parking brake cable to the trans. Disconnect all the wires tie to the trans.

  3. Remove the drive axle connect to the trans. First, remove four bolts holding the drive axle to trans. Second, remove the rear bracket hold the trans to the frame, the drive axle will lower a little bit on the join point. Then use a pry bar disconnect the drive axle away the trans. Use a rubber rope hang the drive axle to the frame.

  4. Remove the rear U bracket which support trans rear to the frame. 8 bolts, 4 bolts on each side. 2 nuts on the bottom. Use a trans jack stands to hold the trans before removing the bolts.

  5. Remove the 4 nuts which connect to the torque converter. 15mm.

  6. Remove all the 7 bolts hold the trans to the engine. 13mm. Remain two bolts to remove in the end, one on each side. Use a long extension to remove the top two bolts.

  7. Disconnect the trans and engine use a pry bar.

  8. Low the trans jack to move the trans out the bottom of the bus.


  9. Suck the fluid in the trans.

  10. Move the parking mechanism from the old trans to the new.















  11. Move the new trans to the trans jack.

  12. Reinstall the trans in the reverse way. Be sure to bleeding all the old trans fluid in the in and out trans cooler line.

  13. Top the trans fluid. Running, check level.

  14. Road test.

Try to start the bus after trans replacement, the bus can not start. The shifter is in N, but the dash shows in R. Check the linkage, it is good. Check the trans fluid level, it is good. Scan for codes, no codes. Adjust the shifter up one hole, let the PCM think the shifter is in N. The bus running good.
